January Events

Father of the Year Essay Contest
Encourage your kids to build their writing skills by entering this contest co-sponsored by the Kansas City Royals and the National Center for Fathering. Awards are made on Father's Day but entry forms are available in January.

Martin Luther King Day Celebrations

Kansas City hosts one of the largest Martin Luther King Day tributes in the United States. While several smaller communities, neighborhoods, and churches offer a variety of programs, Kansas City, Kansas begins with a Motorcade for Hunger, a parade that collects food for the needy and concludes by awarding scholarships to Wyandotte County High School seniors. On the Missouri side, musical and dramatic presentations take place in a variety of city locations, but kids will especially enjoy a festival that honors Dr. King's vision for their future. Call 816-241-0404 for more information.



February Events


Valentine's Day at Lanesfield School
Here's a place where kids can make a Valentine and learn how the holiday was celebrated by children a century ago. Visit www.jocomuseum.org for more information.



Black History Month Celebrations

Several museums and community centers coordinate displays on the contributions of African-Americans to the Kansas City region during this month. Some to consider are:

Midwest Genealogy Center

 

Adults and older children can catch the genealogy bug at the Midwest Genealogy Center. Resources such as newspaper databases, online pedigree charts, and microfilm are all available at the center.
